Our Research Projects
Driving progress through research
Every project we fund is chosen because it brings us closer to real treatments for MVA. Thanks to the generosity and commitment of our research partners, these studies are regularly carried out free of charge, or for a much reduced fee. This means every pound we raise can fund even more vital research in the future.
1. Drug Repurposing Study
We’re testing existing medicines using a worm model of MVA, with research led in London and supported by collaborators in Scotland and Spain. This approach could improve and fast-track treatment options by building on drugs that are already approved for other conditions, leading to new treatment options in years, not decades.
2. Single-Cell RNA Sequencing
In Spain, researchers are comparing single-cell RNA profiles from several MVA patients. This genetic ‘map’ will help us uncover new insights into how MVA affects cells at their core - and identify new targets for therapy.
3. Supplements and Cell Health
Following promising results seen in mouse studies, scientists in the USA are testing whether certain supplements can improve the stability of human MVA cells. If successful, this could open up new supportive treatments for patients.
Because our current projects are being carried out free of charge or for a significantly reduced fee, your donations will directly fuel future research.
So far, we’ve raised £80,000 toward our £250,000 research funding goal - and every step forward brings us closer to real treatment options for MVA. The £250,000 goal would then enable us to hire our own researcher in a lab in London for a 2 year period. This would then allow our research to be significantly propelled forwards.
Recearch grants
The MVA Society aims to ensure focused, compliant and impactful research to advance the Charity’s mission. It aims to be agile and efficient in confirming approvals for research programs that are received to enable timely decision to be taken and maintain momentum.
Given the current size of the MVA Society, we will manage all applications for grants and funding on a case-by-case basis. The Grant Application Form should be used as a ‘guide’ for all applications. Applications may be submitted by universities, hospitals, research organisations, registered companies, or qualified independent researchers.
We would be delighted to hear from you and look forward to reviewing your application together. Please submit your form, along with any questions to info@mvasociety.org
